The small country of Montenegro is a still relatively undiscovered, but rapidly growing in popularity destination thanks to its stunning Adriatic coastline, historic port towns – reminders of the country’s Venetian past, and magnificent mountains resplendent with monasteries, river canyons, glacial lakes, and nature reserves.
In northwestern Montenegro, just a short drive from the busy coast (and even shorter from the capital Podgorica) the UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park is an adventurer’s heaven. With hundreds of miles of marked trails, it is ideal for leisurely or more strenuous hikes amidst lakes, through meadows and valleys, and up rugged peaks, and the Tara River canyon (one of Europe’s deepest) offers some extraordinary rafting.
