The small country of Montenegro is a rapidly growing in popularity destination thanks to its stunning Adriatic coastline, historic port towns – reminders of the country’s Venetian past, and magnificent mountains resplendent with monasteries, river canyons, glacial lakes, and nature reserves.

In northwestern Montenegro, just a short drive from the busy coast (and even shorter from the capital Podgorica) the UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park is an adventurer’s heaven. With hundreds of miles of marked trails, it is ideal for leisurely or more strenuous hikes amidst lakes, through meadows and valleys, and up rugged peaks, and the Tara River canyon (one of Europe’s deepest) offers some extraordinary rafting.

With only a few days to spend in Montenegro, most travelers usually focus on the coast to visit the fortified ports of Kotor and Budva with their narrow cobblestone streets, limestone houses, and medieval cathedrals. In Kotor, you can climb and walk on top of the walls or hike or bike in the hills above to enjoy the splendid views over the bay and the surrounding villages. You can also bike across the Lustica Peninsula and visit a local family which has been producing olive oil for generations.

Adding a few more days will give you a chance to head to the Lovcen National Park and climb to the mountaintop mausoleum of one of the country’s most eminent poets and philosophers, or kayak in the Bay of Kotor. Alternatively, bike or hike in the Durmitor National Park or spend the day whitewater rafting down the Tara River gorge.
