Slovenia

A small but incredibly beautiful country with a tiny stretch of Adriatic coast, Slovenia is often overlooked in favor of its more popular neighbors – Italy, Austria, and Croatia, but has in fact a lot to offer – alpine hikes, rolling countryside with quaint villages, a mixture of Italian and Austro-Hungarian historic and cultural heritage, and surprisingly good local food and wine combining Mediterranean, Germanic, and Balkan traditions.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be delighted by the seemingly endless opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, canyoning, rafting, skiing, and snowshoeing, especially in the areas around the Lake Bled and in the Triglav National Park. Way too often, clients’ feedback is that they wished they had planned to spend more time in Slovenia in order to properly explore and enjoy this delightful destination.

Slovenia - Cultured Adventurer
  • Have a week or less to spare? Because of its small size and excellent roads, many places are within comfortable drive from each other and most of the highlights, like the Postojna Cave, the Predjama Castle, and the Lipica Horse Farm can be visited on day-trips from the capital city Ljubljana with its cute and compact old town straddling the Ljubljanica river, or Bled with its picture-perfect lake, clifftop medieval castle, and small island.

  • Adding a few more days will allow you to explore in depth the Karst region (famous for its cheese, prosciutto ham, and wine), the Adriatic coast (with the historic port of Piran), to enjoy hiking or mountain biking in the Triglav National Park, water sports in the Soca River valley, to walk in Hemingway’s footsteps in and around Kobarid, or to tour the wine regions of eastern Slovenia.

  • Many visitors to the region choose to combine their stay in Slovenia with trips to neighboring countries like Croatia (the Istrian Peninsula and Zagreb) or Italy (Venice and the Veneto region).
